JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHY 

“SHODO” 

FOR RETURNING STUDENTS

Online Japanese calligraphy class taught by Aoi Yamaguchi for returning students, who wish to continue to study further and improve their calligraphy skill.

In this 1.5 hours hands-on workshop designed for returning students, get a further exploration of fundamental Japanese calligraphy brushwork, and find balance within yourself through meditative calligraphy process. Participants will be introduced to the chosen character for the month, with in-depth lectures on basic calligraphy writing techniques and brushwork, focusing on the regular script called Kaisho.

We will practice Kaisho style, or regular script, from the classics 九成宮醴泉銘 (Jincheng Palace Liquan Ming) by 欧陽詢 (Ouyang Xun). We will practice the selected characters on hanshi paper.


* This workshop is designed to accommodate youth & adult beginners, who have completed our Introduction to Shodo: Japanese Calligraphy Workshop for First-time Beginners, or for those who have a beginner level of experience with Japanese calligraphy

What can you expect?

ONE

You will receive the teacher's original model work of the chosen characters of the month, and a couple exercises on basic brushworks in PDF.

TWO

We will begin with a short lecture on a historical background of the classical text and the calligrapher of the historical reference. It is crutial to learn the history and how the writing styles have been developed over the thousands of years.

THREE

It's time to pick up the brush - as you practice some basic strokes as a warm-up exercise, you will receive personal advises from teacher on how you are doing and how you can improve. 

FOUR

After the warm-up, you will tackle on Rinsho - practicing the characters of the month with teacher's model work as a reference. It is time to become ‘one’ with the brush.

ABOUT THE TEACHER: 

AOI 
YAMAGUCHI

Born and raised in Hokkaido, Japan, Aoi Yamaguchi has been trained to master the basics of calligraphy by learning under the Master Zuiho Sato since at the age of 6, and is a recipient of numerous awards. she has performed and exhibited her works in many galleries, museums, universities and festivals in the United States, across Europe, and Japan. Her works show her exploration in juxtaposing the traditional Eastern classics and her contemporary artistic expressions, as well as her unique ambition of transforming two-dimensional art of Japanese Calligraphy into the art of physical expression through performances. Currently residing in Venice, California, Yamaguchi continues her work on her conceptual calligraphy installations, exhibitions, and performances as she continues to push the boundaries of traditional Eastern classics and contemporary artistic expression.

Common qUESTIONS

Do i need to have an experience with calligraphy OR KNOWLEDGE OF JAPANESE?

The workshop is designed to accommodate first-time youth & adult beginners. No prior art experience or knowledge of Japanese language is necessary. The lecture will be taught in English.

WILL THE TEXTBOOK OR MODEL WORK be provided?

Teacher's original worksheets / handouts in PDF will be sent to you to download and print out prior to the session date.

DO I NEED TO PREPARE CALLIGRAPHY TOOLS AND SUPPLIES?

Yes, participants are required to prepare their own Japanese calligraphy tools and supplies for the session. You can source supplies at your local art stores or online, or contact us if you wish to purchase teacher's recommended calligraphy supplies! 

WHAT IF I MISS THE CLASS FOR UNEXPECTED REASONS?

The class will be recorded, and the video will be available for you to watch later on for up to 1 month. You will receive an email with the link after the class when the video is ready.
