Atelier Towa:
Aoi Yamaguchi calligraphy

cordially invites you to

Atelier Towa

Open Studio & Holiday Art Sales

Join us for the preview of my new studio in West Adams district in Los Angeles! I have spent the last 7 months creating the new furniture for the studio in collaboration with my sister, Yui Yamaguchi who's trained in industrial design and woodworking in Japan, to make this vision come true – a space that functions as my art studio, showroom and a workshop. People can learn, create and share the beauty of Japanese calligraphy, combining traditional and modern methods in the a tranquil and nurturing space. I designed the space inspired by the calligraphy school where I studied Japanese calligraphy throughout my childhood, and the nature of my hometown Hokkaido, embracing the warmth of wood highlighting the beauty of its grains and natural edges. The studio space will continue to grow in the coming months.

A selected series of art pieces from the past and new collections, prints and stationaries will be available for sale, and you can learn more about and sign up for upcoming classes in 2025. I truly look forward to welcoming you to take part in this new journey.

Aoi Yamaguchi Calligraphy

アトリエ咏遠

Born and raised in Hokkaido, Japan, Aoi Yamaguchi has been trained to master the basics of calligraphy by learning under the Master Zuiho Sato since at the age of 6, while refining her knowledge and skills. She is a recipient of numerous awards including the First Place prize from the Minister of Education at 44th Asahi Calligraphy Nationwide School Exhibit, and received the Title of Master of Student Calligrapher at the age of 14. Since landed in the U.S. in 2004, she has performed and exhibited her works in many galleries, museums, universities and festivals in the United States, Middle East, across Europe, and Japan.

Aoi established her studio “Atelier Towa” in 2014 in Berkeley, California, where she creates one-of-a-kind artworks, offers Japanese calligraphy workshops and calligraphy supplies curated by the artist herself. The studio is relocated to Los Angeles in 2020, and now opening its door in 2024. In-person workshops and classes in the studio will be offered starting in January, 2025.

咏遠 (towa) is a made-up word consisting of 咏 (to read a poem) and 遠 (faraway) , inspired by the existing word 永遠 (towa) for "eternity". The artist hopes that the studio to remain as a place where the beautiful poems are woven infinitely, and where we can share the beauty, depth, and joy of calligraphy art with people from around the world.

Join us to celebrate the holiday season and the beginning of our new chapter.
